#LostGirl - Faenatics Around the World are Doing the Happy Dance

A-frickin-men! Showcase renewed their hit TV Show, Lost Girl, for a third season. How awesome is that!

With the show starting to air in the US on Syfy January 16, 2012, and an exponentially growing fanbase around the world, there couldn't be a better way to welcome the holidays.

Lost Girl will be on a hiatus after episode 2.13 airs, but returns in full force with new episodes on January 22 at 9pm on Showcase.

A big CONGRATS to all the cast and crew for exceeding the viewers' expectations! I came to the party only about a month ago, but I enjoyed every minute of it and will sure love watching more of this:

And, certainly, so much more of this:

Who's with me?

Ok, going back to my happy dance now.

#LostGirl - Dr. Hotpants Drops the L Bomb

Whoa! Didn’t see that coming, especially after last week’s episode, but I enjoyed every minute of it. I don’t mean just the Doccubus. I also mean Bo/Kenzi, Bo/Dyson and even Lauren/Dyson. Isn’t that what it’s all about? Friends who stand by you when you need them the most? And Hale, OMG! Hats off to him for having Bo’s back the way he did!

This week Bo infiltrates in the violent underground fighting world to help a human muddled with the wrong Fae crowd. But the unexpected encounter with her past is the overwhelming factor in this episode. Her first boyfriend’s sister tracks her down and wants her to pay for killing him years ago after they had sex. This is pure torture for Bo as she came to the realization she never gave his family closure.

As badass and blue-eyed as she was, I so felt for the vulnerable Bo when she was floored in that cage. Her pain was almost mine, too. She didn’t accept Dyson’s offer to get some of his Chi and was just beating herself up for a crime she committed years back because she didn’t know who she was.

Bo isn’t the only one struggling with her past and present. Lauren’s torment at the mere thought of losing Bo while getting Nadia back is more than the usually controlled doctor can take. Lauren’s spur-of-the-moment declaration of love while nursing Bo’s wounds is sadly dismissed by our succubus who’s not keen to process this now. But the look in their eyes speaks volumes. Palmer and Silk nailed it again!

Doccubus4

Past and present aside, I am so looking forward to seeing how this will affect their future.

Lost Girl Kinda Lost Me

I’m no Sci-fi geek but I started watching Lost Girl a couple of weeks ago, when I found out about it thanks to Afterellen’s Dorothy Snarker’s witty Twitter feed. The second season's 22 episodes are now airing on Showcase. It’s the first ever Canadian show I’m into, so I had to delve into it.

Lost Girl is the story of Bo (played by Anna Silk, whose resemblance with Mary Louise Parker is striking!), a lovable succubus who feeds off mortals’ sexual energy. In the first season she had to learn who she was, where she came from and why does she have the habit of leaving a trail of dead lovers behind. On her quest for answers, she takes the path between humans and the Fae (legendary creatures) and meets Dyson, a millennia year-old shapeshifter who falls in love with her. The next important character she gets to know is Dr. Lauren Lewis (Zoie Palmer, the revelation of the show) who helps control her hunger. Further on, questioning her own morals and beliefs, Bo has to deal with relationships and passions that will be put to the test.

Besides the humor which makes this show so much brighter, for which Kenzi (outstandingly portrayed by Ksenia Solo) gets the full credit, the relationships are the second reason I watch Lost Girl. And although Bo is a polyamorous bisexual, I appreciate the show’s lack of labels and sexuality judgements. Plus, Lost Girl appeals to a large and diverse community of fans.

Last week’s episode may have been entertaining for the actors in playing the comedic parts of swapping bodies - how amazing were Dyson as the frenzy Kenzi and Palmer’s reserved Dr. Lewis playing cuckoo! But writing wise it left a lot to be desired.

I am not one of those who can’t live without a tender moment of Bo and Lauren, even though I admit I am 100% Team Lauren, but the inconsistency displayed by both characters confused me. As their relationship was gaining momentum until that fierce kiss at the end of episode 2.08, Lauren gives Bo the cold shoulder at Bo’s attempt to discuss their situation.

Yes, Lauren has been conflicted – not easy to cope with the secret of having a girlfriend who’s been comatose for five years while caring about Bo, but she was always considerate towards Bo’s feelings. Anna Silk and Zoie Palmer are the first two female actors since The L Word’s Jennifer Beals and Laurel Holloman who incorporate that great deal of chemistry, talent and sensibility into their stellar work. Why wouldn’t the writers build upon that?

I sure hope for a graceful Lauren storyline as of now, or Bo/Lauren for that matter. Sending Lauren into limbo, and making Bo pine over Dyson without any reasonable depth is not appealing at all. Treating both Bo/Dyson and Bo/Lauren relationships with the same degree of respect is.

Once upon a time in Paris...

Note: I wrote this piece on November 8, 2010 after the last QAF/TLW Convention in Paris. It is simply my take on what used to be a great experience for so many reasons. Some of you may have read it as it was originally published on Laurel Holloman's website. Since that site has been closed, I decided to post it on my own blog. I would appreciate not seeing it unashamedly copied on other sites/forums without my written consent as it happened in the past with some of my write-ups. I may not have the time to search the web for my stolen work, since I have better things to do plus a life to live, but I won't hesitate to hunt down the culprit if I come across it elsewhere. You're free though to share the link. Thank you!

Laurel Holloman Shines at 'Queer as Folk/The L Word' Convention in Paris 2010

The long awaited moment had come! Two years after attending a British and a French convention, and more than one year since the TV show that made her famous ended, Laurel Holloman came to Paris in an unexpected – but, oh, so welcomed - turn of events (for all L Word Tina’s fans), replacing Kate Moennig who had to call off her presence at the second Queer As Folk/The L Word convention.

Under the “PLanet meets BabyLon” slogan (the hang-out places of the two gay-themed shows’ characters), Laurel joined her co-star and friend, Rachel Shelley, and Queer as Folk’s Randy Harrison, as a special guest of an unforgettable event.

This time a year ago, Ultim’Art was running a poll where fans could vote who they would like to see at the next QAF/TLW French convention. Although the poll didn’t count unique votes, Laurel was, by far, the undeniable winner. And while the Convention poster included the Moennig-Shelley-Harrison trio up till a week before the event, Kate’s short notice cancellation made Laurel’s arrival in Paris more anticipated than ever.

I, for one, found the news surreal. I don’t think I truly realized she was going to make the trip until the moment she tweeted from the airport lounge before boarding her flight to Paris. To me, as a convention newbie who gets to meet one of her favorite actors under such a fantastic circumstance, it was like an out of body experience.

On Saturday, even though I missed my chance of winning a Café VIP PASS with Laurel, which would have meant a 45-minute chat with her, I patiently waited for my turn in lines for the photo shoots and autographs with both L Word ladies. It was like I was trying to take in as much as possible of their presence, as if there was no tomorrow. And I was among the lucky ones who were able to stay until the end of the last day.

I wasn’t pretty successful in chatting with Laurel that first day, as I was star struck big time and thought I wouldn’t make much sense anyway, so the only thing I was able to articulate before the first photo shoot was: “Hi, I’m Anca from the mayhem group, everyone says hi!” And she said, with an ear to ear smile on her face:”Hi, I recognized you from the pictures!”(or something like that…)

I can’t imagine myself not being cranky when jet-lagged and sharing a smile is the last thing I would think of.  But Laurel, although tired, didn’t let it show for one split second. She smiled and talked, she laughed and danced, one would ask her a short question and she would always give an elaborate answer. And all that besides spending a few good hours with the French press every day.

She, unknowingly, put a spell even on her bodyguard. While I was waiting in line for my second photo shoot with her, I witnessed a moment which I regret for the rest of my life I didn’t capture on camera.  Just imagine a 250-pound grown man sitting on one of those bar chairs, looking where Laurel was standing and smiling like a boy touched by the first butterflies in his stomach. Priceless!

On Monday, I had my last autograph session with Laurel and I asked her how her art show was coming. She said she’d like to have the show in early spring, would paint again for the whole summer and in between would focus on acting, too. When I asked whether the unsold painting – “It’s Hard to Get to the Center of Things” -  would be part of her art show, she said it was going to be on display in a Venice bar whose owner absolutely loves it.

After her last autograph session, while she was on her way to the backstage she made a “detour “ on stage where David, the mastermind of the Convention, and Yaele, his right-hand woman, pretended they had a serious chat with the fans about shows they would all watch [while in fact they practiced the dance routine with the fans for the surprise end] and in between shouts of “True Blood rocks!” and God knows what else, Laurel stopped and gave each of them a rose from the ones she got earlier.

There’s more about Laurel Holloman than just looks. It is her personality that shines through and adds to her natural outer beauty. She is an energetic self-starter. With her new artistic expression we witnessed her own rediscovery. In the midst of a career change myself, trying to do something I’ve never been formally trained for, writing in a language that is not my native one, I found Laurel a tremendous inspiration. I learned it’s all about putting your fears and insecurities aside and just take the leap, otherwise you’ll never know how it goes unless you try.

Looking back to last year when I had discovered The L Word phenomenon, I could have never imagined the way this show would change my life. It broke boundaries and built bridges between fans around the world. If it wasn’t for Laurel, I wouldn’t have met the people that came into my life in the past year. I can only be grateful that such conventions keep being organized and the fans keep The L Word spirit alive.

If you want to learn more about what happened at the convention, read the full reports on  l-word.com and suite101.com. For more footage follow Planet meets BabyLon Facebook page, @secretgirlin04 on Twitter and, especially, her youtube channel which is constantly updated with videos from the event.

Last but not least, here is the little video I shot during the closing ceremony.

A big THANK YOU to Ultim’Art and to Laurel, Rachel and Randy for making this convention such a memorable experience!

Jennifer Beals - Her Best Three Video Interviews While Promoting 'The Chicago Code'

The Chicago Code, one of the many shows FOX recently axed, has been one darn good cop drama! Not particularly into that kind of shows, I admit I initially watched it because Jennifer Beals (The L Word - and yes, Flashdance) was in it, but the pilot got me hooked so I grew to like her co-stars equally and instantly. TCC finale aired only a few days ago, but I already feel kinda nostalgic. I think Parlours' little tune at the end of it may have something to do with that, too.

So, I was looking back at some of Jennifer's interviews. Since she was the most notorious cast member, she did a lot of press to promote the show. At some point, there were so many, that I'd lost track of what she said, when and to whom. But three of her video interviews caught my attention and stood out for me. One in LA with Tavis Smiley and two in her adoptive country, the lovely Canada, with Jian Ghomeshi and George Stroumboulopoulos. IMO, the three hosts rocked, their conversations with Jennifer were deep and spot on.

I would never get tired of listening to what this woman has to say. Everything she says is so meaningful and thought-provoking. Even therapeutic, might I add, given her soft-spoken voice. [This doesn't go only for Ms. Beals, but for any other individuals that have something to say without craving attention or being loud.] I am not sure whether her reserve and shyness are part of a strategy or that's simply who she is, but she's certainly anything but a diva.

A few things came out from Tavis Smiley's interview with Jennifer:

  • "... That moment on set (...) that electricity between me and other actor, that's what excites me."
  • "... You need to figure out who you are, what you think and what you believe in, you need to have a life before acting."
  • "I've never based my identity on how other people perceive me, because that's just too dangerous."

Next, George Stroumboulopoulos welcomed her on his show in Toronto.

  • "I'm not planned at all (...) I just really try to follow my heart the best I can with the choices that I'm given and the things that excite me and challenge me"
  • "My heart has not led me astray."
  • "I don't attach a great value to [fame]."
  • "A woman over 40 is viable in all kinds of arenas." (this one really hit home...)

Source: youtube

Last but not least, she joined Jian Ghomeshi in Q studio right after Deepak Chopra was there.

  • "Fame was not my driving force."
  • "[Bette Porter] prepared me for this role on The Chicago Code (...) [it] made me look at culture, certainly pop culture, in a very different way"
  • "[Bette Porter's] sense of righteousness, her sense of self-empowerment and drive, certainly helped prepare me to play Teresa Colvin."
  • "I am strong-willed and I am driven and I'm passionate (...) but I don't know what my cause would be other than trying to tell the truth when I work."
  • "No effort goes unwasted"

Laurel Holloman Paints to the Benefit of Kathmandhu Valley Preservation Trust

Llswing_web

Actress-turned-painter, Laurel Holloman (The L Word), has been living and breathing art for over a year now. A prolific artist, she painted last summer in New York the Tribeca Series which sold out in less than two months. She's been a busy bee ever since.

As she recently announced at L8 in Brighton, Laurel is taking a hiatus from acting for the next 12 months to focus on painting full-time. She is now working on a solo show in Paris and is doing a large commission for a bank in Italy. It's great news that she aims at the 'vieux continent' with her artwork!

Besides that, Laurel's soft spot for charities is well known. Her art contributions to BarkMasaai Wilderness Conservation Trust and Sewing Hope did remarkably well in support of such great causes.

Hence, it comes as no surprise that Laurel is repeating the experience tomorrow, May 2nd, in New York. This time to the benefit of the Kathmandu Valley Preservation Trust (KVPT), an organization that safeguards the extraordinary and threatened architectural heritage of the Kathmandu Valley.

A couple of weeks ago Laurel tweeted that she was "painting with pink", a color of good health and life. She was working on a painting which she is donating to a silent auction for KVPT, to be held tomorrow on KVPT's 20th anniversary. On this very special occasion, the organization's board members set a Gala in New York - "New York For Nepal". Laurel Holloman will be there. This is a fantastic opportunity to make her art even more visible for yet another worthy cause.

Best of luck, Laurel!

UPDATE 05/02/2011: Laurel tweeted that she decided to name the pink painting "mukti"! Coincidence given the last night news? Everything happens for a reason.

Videos: Heather Peace, Jill Jackson & Lisa Tring Mix Power and Emotions in the London Gig's Encore, April 15th

As I mentioned in my post the other day, Heather and Jill saved the best for last -- a fantastic duet. The ballad Forgive Me, written by Jill Jackson, which is included on her album Back To Zero is a heartbreaking mellow masterpiece. Jill's songwriting and the two voices combined is the best I heard in quite some time!

The crowd exploded when they covered Rihanna's Te Amo and Only Girl In The World. I could have sworn Jill's guitar, Lisa's beatbox and Heather's piano were on fire, too. :)

If you haven't had the chance to see these ladies live, do yourself a favor -- stay tuned on where they perform next. It's so much different than watching Youtube videos. The postponed Cardiff gig is set for May 2nd, but am sure Heather will stick to her "See you next year!" promise.

This bit concludes my footage from London's gig on April 15th. My complete review of the show is available here.

Videos: Heather Peace - DJs Got Us Falling in Love & a Surprise Guest at Village Underground

Brill cover of Usher's tune preceded by an emotional moment when Heather thanked Jill et al. Not sure if you can see Heather's teary eyes here; I was so focused on her expression that I forgot to turn my camera towards Jill... Two great artists and voices! Hope they'll continue what they started.

And VIPs were around too. Ruta Gedmintas (Frankie in Lip Service) graced Village Underground with her presence in support of her co-star and couldn't leave without saying a proper hello to the crowd. And Heather introduces the next song, Forgive me (written by Jill Jackson and part of Jill's Back To Zero album) which was part of an extraordinary encore - more in my next post.

After Human Nature, Heather threw her hat to the crowd totally forgetting there's one more gig to play -- Cardiff! :) Now she's gonna need a new one.
