Jennifer Beals - Her Best Three Video Interviews While Promoting 'The Chicago Code'
The Chicago Code, one of the many shows FOX recently axed, has been one darn good cop drama! Not particularly into that kind of shows, I admit I initially watched it because Jennifer Beals (The L Word - and yes, Flashdance) was in it, but the pilot got me hooked so I grew to like her co-stars equally and instantly. TCC finale aired only a few days ago, but I already feel kinda nostalgic. I think Parlours' little tune at the end of it may have something to do with that, too.
So, I was looking back at some of Jennifer's interviews. Since she was the most notorious cast member, she did a lot of press to promote the show. At some point, there were so many, that I'd lost track of what she said, when and to whom. But three of her video interviews caught my attention and stood out for me. One in LA with Tavis Smiley and two in her adoptive country, the lovely Canada, with Jian Ghomeshi and George Stroumboulopoulos. IMO, the three hosts rocked, their conversations with Jennifer were deep and spot on.
I would never get tired of listening to what this woman has to say. Everything she says is so meaningful and thought-provoking. Even therapeutic, might I add, given her soft-spoken voice. [This doesn't go only for Ms. Beals, but for any other individuals that have something to say without craving attention or being loud.] I am not sure whether her reserve and shyness are part of a strategy or that's simply who she is, but she's certainly anything but a diva.
A few things came out from Tavis Smiley's interview with Jennifer:
- "... That moment on set (...) that electricity between me and other actor, that's what excites me."
- "... You need to figure out who you are, what you think and what you believe in, you need to have a life before acting."
- "I've never based my identity on how other people perceive me, because that's just too dangerous."

Next, George Stroumboulopoulos welcomed her on his show in Toronto.
- "I'm not planned at all (...) I just really try to follow my heart the best I can with the choices that I'm given and the things that excite me and challenge me"
- "My heart has not led me astray."
- "I don't attach a great value to [fame]."
- "A woman over 40 is viable in all kinds of arenas." (this one really hit home...)

Last but not least, she joined Jian Ghomeshi in Q studio right after Deepak Chopra was there.
- "Fame was not my driving force."
- "[Bette Porter] prepared me for this role on The Chicago Code (...) [it] made me look at culture, certainly pop culture, in a very different way"
- "[Bette Porter's] sense of righteousness, her sense of self-empowerment and drive, certainly helped prepare me to play Teresa Colvin."
- "I am strong-willed and I am driven and I'm passionate (...) but I don't know what my cause would be other than trying to tell the truth when I work."
- "No effort goes unwasted"
