Laurel Holloman Paints to the Benefit of Kathmandhu Valley Preservation Trust

Actress-turned-painter, Laurel Holloman (The L Word), has been living and breathing art for over a year now. A prolific artist, she painted last summer in New York the Tribeca Series which sold out in less than two months. She's been a busy bee ever since.
As she recently announced at L8 in Brighton, Laurel is taking a hiatus from acting for the next 12 months to focus on painting full-time. She is now working on a solo show in Paris and is doing a large commission for a bank in Italy. It's great news that she aims at the 'vieux continent' with her artwork!
Besides that, Laurel's soft spot for charities is well known. Her art contributions to Bark, Masaai Wilderness Conservation Trust and Sewing Hope did remarkably well in support of such great causes.
Hence, it comes as no surprise that Laurel is repeating the experience tomorrow, May 2nd, in New York. This time to the benefit of the Kathmandu Valley Preservation Trust (KVPT), an organization that safeguards the extraordinary and threatened architectural heritage of the Kathmandu Valley.
A couple of weeks ago Laurel tweeted that she was "painting with pink", a color of good health and life. She was working on a painting which she is donating to a silent auction for KVPT, to be held tomorrow on KVPT's 20th anniversary. On this very special occasion, the organization's board members set a Gala in New York - "New York For Nepal". Laurel Holloman will be there. This is a fantastic opportunity to make her art even more visible for yet another worthy cause.

Laurel Holloman - New Studio, Painting Videos, L8
First post this year on my personal blog, not because I was lazy, but because - as some of you may know - I have been busy with my freelance writing endeavours. Mainly, building an online portfolio along with some confidence. Both an ongoing process, while I keep in the back of my mind the old saying "when in doubt, work it out". :)
What I'm going to post about here is no news to Ms. Holloman's die hard fans.
Some of us will meet her again in less than two weeks in Brighton, at Starfury's eighth (!) L Word convention (woohoo!) in a great line-up alongside Erin Daniels, Lauren Lee Smith, Janina Gavankar, Clementine Ford, Kate French, plus Lip Service's Heather Peace. And from The Real L Word, Tracy Ryerson with her life partner Stamie Karakasidis.
Can't believe it's been eight "L" conventions already - in six years, if I'm correct - and I haven't been to any of those yet. Plus, the ninth is being prepped as we speak. And The L Word wrapped up nearly two years ago! Amazing, isn't it?
Meanwhile, Laurel is painting her heart out for a huge Italian commission in her new studio where she gracefully welcomed her fans, even though not literally. Thank God for technology and for Laurel's right hand, Michele! :)

Laurel Holloman: The ‘Angel’ Behind the ‘DIVA’
Still very much influenced by the recent French QAF/TLW convention, I couldn’t help associating the two terms in the title of this post.
The former, a topic brought up during the convention not only due to a stunt Laurel, coincidentally, did in the back of the venue jumping over a 6-foot gate “channeling” Justine - the character she portrayed in Angel - but also because she discussed Angel in a bit more detail: from the humor and action it had in it and, nonetheless, being one of Jennifer Beals’ favorite TV shows, to Laurel’s wish of getting involved in an action-based project again.
The latter, because not too long before she came to Paris, Laurel hosted the DIVA magazine crew for the most sizzling photo shoot at her home in Los Angeles. Like in Jennifer’s case (see DIVA’s August issue), the photos were taken by the same amazing Kharen Hill. In charge as a stylist for DIVA’s December cover story was the one and only, Cynthia Summers - who made The L Word ladies “paragons of style for TV audiences”.
What do these two terms have in common? A woman who knows no obstacles. A woman who is comfortable in her skin. A woman who hates labeling people.
In an interview with her friend, former co-star and DIVA columnist, Rachel Shelley, Laurel Holloman talks about acceptance of people’s sexual fluidity, the new career path she has taken for the most part of this year as a painter, and life after The L Word.
But, probably, the most self-reflective part of her interview is at the very end of it: “Every day I strive to get to a place where I’m not affected by the external world (…) I strive for a state of equanimity and calm and a state of grace, so I can be free of definitions. If you are free, then you can create beautiful things (…)”
And this is what Laurel is doing while she follows her heart.

Being in the limelight at any cost is not her thing. Thank God there are actors who know when to lay low while taking their time to pursue other interests or talents. Laurel Holloman is certainly one of them.
She is a gifted actress, no loyal fan of hers has any doubt by now about that. Laurel reached way beyond the LGBT community portraying two emblematic lesbian characters: in the mid 90’s, as the baby butch Randy Dean in the indie film ‘The Incredibly True Story Of Two Girls In Love'’ and recently - for no less than six seasons - as Tina Kennard in Showtime's ground breaking TV show ‘The L Word’. She may not be on the cover of every glossy magazine, but she knows to wait for the right time to get back into the public eye.
After spending the summer in New York with her daughters - a prolific time that has materialized into a remarkable collection of large-format abstract paintings, the Tribeca series, now for sale online on her art website - she returns to L.A. more determined than ever to pursue her art in the City of Angels.
In the last couple of weeks, Laurel was interviewed by Afterellen.com, the Aussie radio show The Hump Day Crew and Shewired.com. Fans all around the world devoured her every word avid to see what she’s up to next. We’ve read and listened to a Laurel who is hopeful for an L Word movie, tactful on who killed Jenny Schecter, a hopeless romantic and, above all, a mother looking for the right balance between single parenting (while her husband works on a project in China), acting and painting. I, for one, was taken by how appreciative of her L Word fans she is, her openness about her art and how an important part of her life painting has become.
All these past months, Laurel stayed in contact with her worldwide fan base mainly through her Twitter page sharing not only the creation process of some of her paintings but also a glimpse into her life in NYC showing us just how human she is.
The 2010 Primetime Emmy Awards night was the night when dressed up by the fabulous Craig Signer, actress Laurel Holloman, reunited with her BFF, entertainment journalist Miki Turner, made her major public appearance this year striking first a glam-style pose at LACMA in front of Leroy Hamilton’s magic lens.
Once the photo shoot was over, they took off to the HBO's Post Award Reception for a great evening. Myjet247.com’s Miki captured the fun while she mingled with the stars.
Now with her L.A. studio set up, although she misses the Hudson river view (and, frankly, so do I! ;) ), Laurel is all set for the upcoming months. Her paintings on laurelhollomanstudio.net are selling very well and she’s prepping her first art show in Los Angeles this fall. Painting is no longer a hobby or a release, it has become a serious business for Laurel.
And all of these are topped by her new TV show ‘Gigantic’ which premieres October 8 on TeenNick. Her character (RaeAnne Colvin) “used to be a rock and roller and she’s a one-hit wonder who ends up in an abusive relationship and winds up raising her teenage son by herself and they have a very nontraditional relationship.” The show has an incredibly talented young cast: Grace Gummer (Meryl Streep’s daughter), Gia Mantegna (Joe Mantegna’s daughter), Ryan Rottman, Jolene Purdy and Tony Oller.
Attention to beauty was not just one of Tina Kennard’s values. Immersed in the world of esthetics, Laurel excels at that and with her firm determination that she could move mountains with and her creativity flow, we will see for sure more collections coming up and more rewarding experiences for her and, ultimately, for her die-hard fans. Because she's back!
