Once upon a time in Paris...

Note: I wrote this piece on November 8, 2010 after the last QAF/TLW Convention in Paris. It is simply my take on what used to be a great experience for so many reasons. Some of you may have read it as it was originally published on Laurel Holloman's website. Since that site has been closed, I decided to post it on my own blog. I would appreciate not seeing it unashamedly copied on other sites/forums without my written consent as it happened in the past with some of my write-ups. I may not have the time to search the web for my stolen work, since I have better things to do plus a life to live, but I won't hesitate to hunt down the culprit if I come across it elsewhere. You're free though to share the link. Thank you!

Laurel Holloman Shines at 'Queer as Folk/The L Word' Convention in Paris 2010

The long awaited moment had come! Two years after attending a British and a French convention, and more than one year since the TV show that made her famous ended, Laurel Holloman came to Paris in an unexpected – but, oh, so welcomed - turn of events (for all L Word Tina’s fans), replacing Kate Moennig who had to call off her presence at the second Queer As Folk/The L Word convention.

Under the “PLanet meets BabyLon” slogan (the hang-out places of the two gay-themed shows’ characters), Laurel joined her co-star and friend, Rachel Shelley, and Queer as Folk’s Randy Harrison, as a special guest of an unforgettable event.

This time a year ago, Ultim’Art was running a poll where fans could vote who they would like to see at the next QAF/TLW French convention. Although the poll didn’t count unique votes, Laurel was, by far, the undeniable winner. And while the Convention poster included the Moennig-Shelley-Harrison trio up till a week before the event, Kate’s short notice cancellation made Laurel’s arrival in Paris more anticipated than ever.

I, for one, found the news surreal. I don’t think I truly realized she was going to make the trip until the moment she tweeted from the airport lounge before boarding her flight to Paris. To me, as a convention newbie who gets to meet one of her favorite actors under such a fantastic circumstance, it was like an out of body experience.

On Saturday, even though I missed my chance of winning a Café VIP PASS with Laurel, which would have meant a 45-minute chat with her, I patiently waited for my turn in lines for the photo shoots and autographs with both L Word ladies. It was like I was trying to take in as much as possible of their presence, as if there was no tomorrow. And I was among the lucky ones who were able to stay until the end of the last day.

I wasn’t pretty successful in chatting with Laurel that first day, as I was star struck big time and thought I wouldn’t make much sense anyway, so the only thing I was able to articulate before the first photo shoot was: “Hi, I’m Anca from the mayhem group, everyone says hi!” And she said, with an ear to ear smile on her face:”Hi, I recognized you from the pictures!”(or something like that…)

I can’t imagine myself not being cranky when jet-lagged and sharing a smile is the last thing I would think of.  But Laurel, although tired, didn’t let it show for one split second. She smiled and talked, she laughed and danced, one would ask her a short question and she would always give an elaborate answer. And all that besides spending a few good hours with the French press every day.

She, unknowingly, put a spell even on her bodyguard. While I was waiting in line for my second photo shoot with her, I witnessed a moment which I regret for the rest of my life I didn’t capture on camera.  Just imagine a 250-pound grown man sitting on one of those bar chairs, looking where Laurel was standing and smiling like a boy touched by the first butterflies in his stomach. Priceless!

On Monday, I had my last autograph session with Laurel and I asked her how her art show was coming. She said she’d like to have the show in early spring, would paint again for the whole summer and in between would focus on acting, too. When I asked whether the unsold painting – “It’s Hard to Get to the Center of Things” -  would be part of her art show, she said it was going to be on display in a Venice bar whose owner absolutely loves it.

After her last autograph session, while she was on her way to the backstage she made a “detour “ on stage where David, the mastermind of the Convention, and Yaele, his right-hand woman, pretended they had a serious chat with the fans about shows they would all watch [while in fact they practiced the dance routine with the fans for the surprise end] and in between shouts of “True Blood rocks!” and God knows what else, Laurel stopped and gave each of them a rose from the ones she got earlier.

There’s more about Laurel Holloman than just looks. It is her personality that shines through and adds to her natural outer beauty. She is an energetic self-starter. With her new artistic expression we witnessed her own rediscovery. In the midst of a career change myself, trying to do something I’ve never been formally trained for, writing in a language that is not my native one, I found Laurel a tremendous inspiration. I learned it’s all about putting your fears and insecurities aside and just take the leap, otherwise you’ll never know how it goes unless you try.

Looking back to last year when I had discovered The L Word phenomenon, I could have never imagined the way this show would change my life. It broke boundaries and built bridges between fans around the world. If it wasn’t for Laurel, I wouldn’t have met the people that came into my life in the past year. I can only be grateful that such conventions keep being organized and the fans keep The L Word spirit alive.

If you want to learn more about what happened at the convention, read the full reports on  l-word.com and suite101.com. For more footage follow Planet meets BabyLon Facebook page, @secretgirlin04 on Twitter and, especially, her youtube channel which is constantly updated with videos from the event.

Last but not least, here is the little video I shot during the closing ceremony.

A big THANK YOU to Ultim’Art and to Laurel, Rachel and Randy for making this convention such a memorable experience!

Jennifer Beals - Her Best Three Video Interviews While Promoting 'The Chicago Code'

The Chicago Code, one of the many shows FOX recently axed, has been one darn good cop drama! Not particularly into that kind of shows, I admit I initially watched it because Jennifer Beals (The L Word - and yes, Flashdance) was in it, but the pilot got me hooked so I grew to like her co-stars equally and instantly. TCC finale aired only a few days ago, but I already feel kinda nostalgic. I think Parlours' little tune at the end of it may have something to do with that, too.

So, I was looking back at some of Jennifer's interviews. Since she was the most notorious cast member, she did a lot of press to promote the show. At some point, there were so many, that I'd lost track of what she said, when and to whom. But three of her video interviews caught my attention and stood out for me. One in LA with Tavis Smiley and two in her adoptive country, the lovely Canada, with Jian Ghomeshi and George Stroumboulopoulos. IMO, the three hosts rocked, their conversations with Jennifer were deep and spot on.

I would never get tired of listening to what this woman has to say. Everything she says is so meaningful and thought-provoking. Even therapeutic, might I add, given her soft-spoken voice. [This doesn't go only for Ms. Beals, but for any other individuals that have something to say without craving attention or being loud.] I am not sure whether her reserve and shyness are part of a strategy or that's simply who she is, but she's certainly anything but a diva.

A few things came out from Tavis Smiley's interview with Jennifer:

  • "... That moment on set (...) that electricity between me and other actor, that's what excites me."
  • "... You need to figure out who you are, what you think and what you believe in, you need to have a life before acting."
  • "I've never based my identity on how other people perceive me, because that's just too dangerous."

Next, George Stroumboulopoulos welcomed her on his show in Toronto.

  • "I'm not planned at all (...) I just really try to follow my heart the best I can with the choices that I'm given and the things that excite me and challenge me"
  • "My heart has not led me astray."
  • "I don't attach a great value to [fame]."
  • "A woman over 40 is viable in all kinds of arenas." (this one really hit home...)

Source: youtube

Last but not least, she joined Jian Ghomeshi in Q studio right after Deepak Chopra was there.

  • "Fame was not my driving force."
  • "[Bette Porter] prepared me for this role on The Chicago Code (...) [it] made me look at culture, certainly pop culture, in a very different way"
  • "[Bette Porter's] sense of righteousness, her sense of self-empowerment and drive, certainly helped prepare me to play Teresa Colvin."
  • "I am strong-willed and I am driven and I'm passionate (...) but I don't know what my cause would be other than trying to tell the truth when I work."
  • "No effort goes unwasted"

Laurel Holloman Paints to the Benefit of Kathmandhu Valley Preservation Trust

Actress-turned-painter, Laurel Holloman (The L Word), has been living and breathing art for over a year now. A prolific artist, she painted last summer in New York the Tribeca Series which sold out in less than two months. She's been a busy bee ever since.

As she recently announced at L8 in Brighton, Laurel is taking a hiatus from acting for the next 12 months to focus on painting full-time. She is now working on a solo show in Paris and is doing a large commission for a bank in Italy. It's great news that she aims at the 'vieux continent' with her artwork!

Besides that, Laurel's soft spot for charities is well known. Her art contributions to BarkMasaai Wilderness Conservation Trust and Sewing Hope did remarkably well in support of such great causes.

Hence, it comes as no surprise that Laurel is repeating the experience tomorrow, May 2nd, in New York. This time to the benefit of the Kathmandu Valley Preservation Trust (KVPT), an organization that safeguards the extraordinary and threatened architectural heritage of the Kathmandu Valley.

A couple of weeks ago Laurel tweeted that she was "painting with pink", a color of good health and life. She was working on a painting which she is donating to a silent auction for KVPT, to be held tomorrow on KVPT's 20th anniversary. On this very special occasion, the organization's board members set a Gala in New York - "New York For Nepal". Laurel Holloman will be there. This is a fantastic opportunity to make her art even more visible for yet another worthy cause.

Best of luck, Laurel!

UPDATE 05/02/2011: Laurel tweeted that she decided to name the pink painting "mukti"! Coincidence given the last night news? Everything happens for a reason.

Laurel Holloman - New Studio, Painting Videos, L8

First post this year on my personal blog, not because I was lazy, but because - as some of you may know - I have been busy with my freelance writing endeavours. Mainly, building an online portfolio along with some confidence. Both an ongoing process, while I keep in the back of my mind the old saying "when in doubt, work it out". :)

What I'm going to post about here is no news to Ms. Holloman's die hard fans.

Some of us will meet her again in less than two weeks in Brighton, at Starfury's eighth (!) L Word convention (woohoo!) in a great line-up alongside Erin Daniels, Lauren Lee Smith, Janina Gavankar, Clementine Ford, Kate French, plus Lip Service's Heather Peace. And from The Real L Word, Tracy Ryerson with her life partner Stamie Karakasidis.

Can't believe it's been eight "L" conventions already - in six years, if I'm correct - and I haven't been to any of those yet. Plus, the ninth is being prepped as we speak. And The L Word wrapped up nearly two years ago! Amazing, isn't it?

Meanwhile, Laurel is painting her heart out for a huge Italian commission in her new studio where she gracefully welcomed her fans, even though not literally. Thank God for technology and for Laurel's right hand, Michele! :)

Keep an eye on Laurel Holloman Studio Youtube channel! If you live in a country where all the four videos are accessible, consider yourself lucky! Where I live only two of them can be watched...

And because I couldn't have closed this without something endearing, here is Laurel's video from last November in Paris of the little quiz she was asked to answer. Isn't she just adorable? :)

Laurel Holloman: The ‘Angel’ Behind the ‘DIVA’

Diva_cover

Still very much influenced by the recent French QAF/TLW convention, I couldn’t help associating the two terms in the title of this post.

The former, a topic brought up during the convention not only due to a stunt Laurel, coincidentally, did in the back of the venue jumping over a 6-foot gate “channeling” Justine - the character she portrayed in Angel - but also because she discussed Angel in a bit more detail: from the humor and action it had in it and, nonetheless, being one of Jennifer Beals’ favorite TV shows, to Laurel’s wish of getting involved in an action-based project again.

The latter, because not too long before she came to Paris, Laurel hosted the DIVA magazine crew for the most sizzling photo shoot at her home in Los Angeles. Like in Jennifer’s case (see DIVA’s August issue), the photos were taken by the same amazing Kharen Hill. In charge as a stylist for DIVA’s December cover story was the one and only, Cynthia Summers - who made The L Word ladies “paragons of style for TV audiences”.

What do these two terms have in common? A woman who knows no obstacles. A woman who is comfortable in her skin. A woman who hates labeling people.

In an interview with her friend, former co-star and DIVA columnist, Rachel Shelley, Laurel Holloman talks about acceptance of people’s sexual fluidity, the new career path she has taken for the most part of this year as a painter, and life after The L Word.

But, probably, the most self-reflective part of her interview is at the very end of it: “Every day I strive to get to a place where I’m not affected by the external world (…) I strive for a state of equanimity and calm and a state of grace, so I can be free of definitions. If you are free, then you can create beautiful things (…)”

And this is what Laurel is doing while she follows her heart.

La DIVA Beals

I’m not a DIVA mag reader, but as soon as I heard Jennifer Beals would be the cover girl of August issue, I decided I must buy that one. For more than a month ahead, Twitter was full of heads-up starting from the @DIVAmagazine itself to all the fans who were holding their breath to see the new cover story of ‘La Diva Beals’. And, frankly, who  - man or woman, gay or straight - would resist to a cover like this?

Jb_divacover

It was thanks to her friendship with Rachel Shelley, THE Helena Peabody of The L Word, that we got to read Jennifer’s answers to Rachel’s veeery carefully selected questions. Rachel has a regular column in DIVA, where she shares anecdotes about her time on The L Word and relates them to her present day experiences.

Jennifer Beals’ DIVA photos, taken by Kharen Hill, are by far some of the best that I have seen. She simply exudes a haunting super sexiness that makes it impossible to look away from her. I really loved a remark I read a while ago about Jennifer saying that she “looks so good it defies medical science”. On the other hand, I’d rather not use or hear any longer these three words: “for her age”. She is definitely not 110, people! At 46 she is just in her full badass glory!

Her latest photographic project, The L Word photo book, has been selling like hot cakes. DIVA magazine will be auctioning a copy of the book signed by Jennifer with all proceeds going to Mia Kirshner’s I Live Here project. (Details at http://divamag.co.uk)

With a sky-rocketing career, being so in demand since The L Word, she has still so much in store for both herself and her fans. She partnered with Denzel Washington and Gary Oldman in post-apocalyptic tale The Book of Eli, she reminded us of the alpha female Bette Porter in her recurring Lie To Me role as the confident Assistant U.S. attorney Zoe Landau, she starred in the indie film A Night for Dying Tigers (currently in post production).

The icing on the cake? Her own show! Everyone who will Ride-Along Chicago’s first female Chief of Police, Superintendent Teresa Colvin, hopes for Jennifer’s recognition in the shape of an EMMY as the lead in Shawn Ryan’s new TV show.

Meanwhile, if you want to see how elusive, mysterious, enigmatic, secretive and – did I mention sexy? - Jennifer Beals can be, you can order the DIVA mag in print as well as digital. I have no doubt that you will enjoy it!

Photographic Prints from Jennifer Beals' L Word BOOK

"Waiting" seems to be the key word for TLW fans this year. At long last, after more than two months since Jennifer Beals launched The L WORD photo book, prints of 23 photos are now available online for purchase, 5 of them in Limited Edition.  Almost in the same time with the new Flashdance Barbie release. No idea whether this was some kind of a marketing strategy or simply a coincidence…  I for one am going to focus less on the new Barbie which other than the curls, sweatshirt and legwarmers doesn't resemble to the Alex character that Jennifer portrayed in Flashdance at all. Besides, I am way too old for a Barbie doll!

More on the prints now. It came as a surprise to many of us that they are pricey, between 150$-500$, while the price for a Limited Edition photo ranges from 500$ (size 8”x10”) to 1,500$ (size 16”x20”)! What sounds very tempting though is that each Limited Edition photo is signed by Jennifer and will be printed on a fine art paper. Who wouldn’t want to be the owner of a piece signed by the artist herself?

On the other hand, the selection of photos does not seem to meet everyone’s taste. Some of the fans would have wanted to see more Laurel or Kate’s photos and less Daniela, Leisha or Mia’s photos for that matter. Others believe that a better selection would raise the sales hence higher proceeds. At the end of the day everyone has the right to their own opinion and can make their own choice whether to buy or not.

My own favorites are the group photos, just as much as I enjoyed the group scenes of the L Word. The basketball game (how hilarious was that?), the dance rehearsal (remember the Line Dance in ep. 6.07?), first rehearsal (before shooting the pilot) and the one I love the most, Laurel & Kate picnic table during one of their breaks while shooting the "Last Couple Standing" episode.

You can order the prints at http://store.lwordbook.com/. For each photograph from the Limited Edition, the prints will be limited to 70 for each of the three sizes. The artist has retained edition numbers 1 through 12 of each photograph and those editions may be available for purchase. Contact info@lwordbook.com for more information.

The proceeds from the prints will go to several different charities including the Matthew Shepard Foundation, Mia Kirshner's I Live Here Projects, a Project of ETINA and The Pablove Foundation.

My Personal Take on Jennifer Beals’ L Word photo book

Jb_lword_book

It took me a month to have my book delivered. I was among those who ordered it as soon as it was available online. But a software glitch has frozen and delayed a significant number of initial orders. Eventually, as good things happen to those who wait, I got it. My own “L Word photo book”.

It was well worth the wait and then some!

It is THE Journey of a group of distinct individuals who grew to become a family, the way they valued their friendships on and beyond screen and so many more other aspects we wouldn’t have had access to hadn’t this book been printed.

Reading it more than once by now brought back lots of memories of what this group of women shared over a 6-year span. 6 years that made such a difference in the viewers’ lives. Each and every one of us has, for sure, a story about the way “The L Word” has influenced us one way or the other, whether it’s about coming out, becoming a better partner, friend, or simply a better person.

As Jennifer points out “This show was, among others, about the power of storytelling.” We were so lucky to be part of this exceptional adventure, firstly as viewers of the show and secondly as readers of this treasured photographic journal.

The photos as well as the girls’ conversations are absolutely priceless.

I was particularly impressed by Laurel Holloman’s note to Jennifer and Rachel Shelley’s story about gaining two friends once she met Laurel.

But above all, three pictures got my attention and all of them, coincidently or not, are related to Laurel and her becoming a mother.

Laurel pregnant in Jennifer’s trailer. I must admit I rarely had a chance to see so much beauty in a pregnant woman. Laurel was glowing the whole second season and her transformation through motherhood was the best thing I’ve had the chance to witness along the show. Jennifer, who was so emotional the day Lola was born, had later benefited - thanks to Laurel - from a nice paved way while becoming a mother herself.

Lwordbook3

The cast meets Lola. To me this is another emotional moment. Laurel, the proud mother, holds Lola and introduces her to the girls. The excitement on Erin, Kate and Leisha’s faces says it all.

Dsc03569
Lola on her mother’s lap while she was still a tiny cute baby. One of the pictures I haven’t seen before, a genuine mother/child moment, it just speaks for itself. And it is such a testimony for the upcoming Mother’s Day.

Dsc03567

I am so appreciative of the idea Jennifer had to make this book not only for the cast, but also for us and moreover to support various charities. A big THANK YOU to Jennifer Beals and all “The L Word” cast and crew members for letting us be a part of this incredible journey! I enjoyed every minute of it and the book will be instrumental in keeping TLW spirit alive and memories fresh.

You can order Jennifer’s photo book at http://www.lwordbook.com/, with or without a dedication page in front. Also, a personalized version of the book will be available, where fans can add their own photos at the end. Apart from that, a selection of images featured in the book will be available at a variety of sizes. Make a gift to yourselves, your friends and the community.

ALL proceeds are going to a number of charities that Jennifer kindly and actively supports.
